Nuclear and radiation threats. Zaporizhzhia NPP has been in blackout for 6 days - State Nuclear Regulatory Commission

The temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP has been without communication with the Ukrainian power system for the sixth day and is powered by backup diesel power plants. Such actions by the aggressor country of russia pose major threats to nuclear and radiation safety. This is stated in a statement by the State Nuclear Regulatory Commission of Ukraine on Monday, September 29.

The Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine, Oleh Korikov, emphasized that for the sixth day, the safety systems of the Zaporizhzhia NPP have been powered only by backup diesel power plants. According to him, if the occupiers do not restore the power supply to the station from the Ukrainian power system, the threats to nuclear and radiation safety will increase significantly.

"The occupiers' disregard for the requirements and principles of nuclear and radiation safety, the shelling of power lines by russian troops and their damage, the creation of obstacles to the restoration of these lines by Ukrainian specialists - all these actions could well lead to the worst-case scenario," Korikov emphasized.

It is currently unknown how long diesel fuel will be able to support the operation of the cooling systems for irradiated nuclear fuel located in all six reactors and in the aging pools, the inspector noted.
