US bans Iranian officials from shopping in New York during UN summit

Iranian officials at this year's UN summit will not be able to shop in New York due to restrictions imposed by the US government. They are now prohibited from shopping at wholesale stores such as Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club, as well as purchasing luxury items without special permission from the State Department.

The Guardian reports this.

"We will not allow the Iranian regime to allow its clerical elites to have a shopping spree in New York while the Iranian people endure poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and dire shortages of water and electricity," said State Department spokesman Thomas Pigott.

The restrictions apply to expensive goods, including watches, electronics and cars worth more than USD 60,000. The measures are part of a "maximum pressure" campaign on Tehran, whose economy has been hit hard by US sanctions that have hit imports of goods and oil exports.
