One of the latest posts by US President Donald Trump, in which he said that Ukraine is capable of returning all its territory, may indicate his intention to distance himself from the war.
This was reported by Reuters on Wednesday, September 24.
Neil Melvin, director of international security at the Royal United Institute for Defense Studies (RUSI), believes that society was really inspired by Trump's post, as it indicates a change in understanding of the conflict.
"He recognized that the conflict is more complex, and is clearly disappointed with putin, so I think it is perhaps a success of Ukrainian and European diplomacy that this explanation was heard," Melvin said.
At the same time, he emphasized that in his post Trump probably made it clear that he intends to further distance the United States from the war in Ukraine.
The unnamed Reuters sources also warned that Trump appears to be making it clear that support for Ukraine now depends entirely on Europe.
"It looks like he's saying goodbye, doesn't he? But tomorrow everything could change. In any case, everything is clear to us. We know what we need to do," said one of the European officials.
Another source to the agency noted that Trump is sending a signal that Ukraine is now a European issue.
Trump said Ukraine's ability to regain territory
On Tuesday, September 23, Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network that Ukraine is capable of fighting and restoring all of its territory. He emphasized that this could happen with the support of the European Union, as well as NATO countries. Trump did not mention the United States in his post.
How did Ukraine react to Trump's post
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyн, he was surprised by the American leader's post. In an interview with Fox News, Zelenskyн called Trump's statement "positive."
