Zelenskyy decides to reappoint Reshetylova as military ombudsman with legal powers

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that after the Verkhovna Rada adopts the law on the military ombudsman, he will appoint Olha Reshetylova (Kobylynska), whom he previously appointed as the Presidential Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Military Personnel and Their Families, to this position. Zelenskyy announced this in a traditional evening video address, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"I thank the members of parliament for passing my bill on the Military Ombudsman. This is about the real protection of our warriors' rights. The law has already been signed and published. Today, I signed a decree to put it into effect – a decree establishing the Office of the Military Ombudsman," he said.

Zelenskyy added that the launch of the institution and its systematic work is ahead.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in December 2024, Zelensky appointed human rights activist Olha Kobylinska (Reshetylova) as the Presidential Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Military Personnel and Their Families.

On September 17, the Verkhovna Rada legalized the position of the Military Ombudsman.

It is envisaged to create the Office of the Military Ombudsman as an auxiliary body under the President to exercise the functions of civilian democratic control over the observance of the rights of all Defense Forces - active military personnel, fighters of volunteer formations of territorial communities, reservists on exercises, participants in the resistance movement during the occupation, and law enforcement officers participating in hostilities.

The Military Ombudsman will resolve problematic issues regarding military service and consider complaints, may appoint inspections and develop decisions, and will report annually to the President and the Verkhovna Rada.
