Russia appeals to International Court of Justice ICAO decision on flight MH17

On September 18, russia filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice against the decision of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which recognized moscow as involved in the shooting down of flight MH17 in July 2014.

The russian Foreign Ministry reported this on Telegram.

The department stated that the ICAO decision is "groundless" and, in their opinion, was made for "political reasons". The russian Foreign Ministry also noted that the organization's Council took into account the results of the technical and criminal investigations led by the Netherlands, which moscow considers questionable, as well as the "facts" provided by Ukraine.

On July 17, 2014, the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down in the Donbas, killing all 298 people on board. A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) from the Netherlands, Malaysia, Australia, Belgium and Ukraine was formed to investigate. Russia denies any involvement.

In 2019, telephone conversations between collaborators and occupiers in the MH17 crash case were published.

On November 17, 2022, the District Court of The Hague found Igor Girkin, Sergey Dubinsky and Leonid Kharchenko guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The court also awarded over EUR 16 million in compensation to the relatives of the victims and found that russia had controlled the "DPR" since May 2014.

In February 2023, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) investigating the causes of the MH17 crash stated that russian dictator vladimir putin personally approved the transfer of the Buk-M1 air defense system to the "DPR" militants who shot down the passenger plane.
