Taliban leader orders cable Internet shutdown in Afghanistan, Wi-Fi no longer available in 13 provinces

In Afghanistan, which is controlled by the Taliban movement, cable Internet has been banned to "prevent immorality." So far, the restrictions have affected only one province.

The corresponding order was issued by Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, The Associated Press reports.

According to Akhundzada's order, cable Internet was banned in the northern province of Balkh. Government institutions, public organizations and residential buildings were left without Wi-Fi. At the same time, mobile Internet continues to work in the region.

Haji Attaullah Zaid, a representative of the regional government, confirmed that cable Internet is indeed no longer working in Balkh province.

"This measure was taken to prevent immorality, and an alternative will be created in the country to meet the necessary needs," Zaid said.

He did not explain why this particular province was chosen to ban cable Internet and whether the shutdown would extend to other regions.

The agency notes that this is the first ban of this kind since the Taliban movement came to power in 2021.

According to Reuters, citing its own sources, the cable Internet shutdown also affected the provinces of Kunduz, Badakhshan, Baghlan and Takhar.

According to the Amu TV channel, cable Internet was blocked in thirteen provinces. An unnamed source from the channel said that the Taliban is implementing a broad campaign to increase censorship. The cable Internet shutdown is just one of its elements.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in July this year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Taliban leaders over their repression of Afghan women.

Recall that in 2021, Afghanistan banned the broadcasting of films or shows featuring women.
