ICC issues arrest warrants for Taliban leaders over repression of Afghan women

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for leaders of the Taliban movement, which has taken full control of Afghanistan since the events of 2021. They are accused of organizing large-scale repression of women.

This is stated in a message on the official website of the ICC.

Thus, the ICC has issued arrest warrants for Haibatullah Akhundzada and Abdul Hakim Haqqani. The former is the supreme leader of the Taliban, the latter is the head of the Supreme Court of Afghanistan.

The ICC charges them with committing crimes against humanity in the form of gender-based persecution of girls, women and other persons who do not conform to the Taliban's policy on gender, gender identity or expression of gender identity.

These crimes are believed to have been committed in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power on August 15, 2021, and continued until at least January 20, 2025.

The ICC noted that while the Taliban imposed certain rules and restrictions on the entire population, it specifically targeted girls and women, depriving them of fundamental rights and freedoms.

Women were deprived of their rights to education, private and family life, freedom of expression, thought, conscience and religion.

In addition, the ICC found that other individuals described as "allies of girls and women" were targeted. The Taliban leadership views them as political opponents.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in December 2024, the Taliban leadership ordered to close windows overlooking areas used by women.

In October 2024, the Taliban issued a decree prohibiting women from talking to each other, praying, or reading the Quran aloud in the presence of other women.

And in 2023, women in Afghanistan were banned from entering universities, under threat of punishment for violating this rule.
