A russian fishing vessel was intercepted in the Øresund Strait near Sweden by the coast guard and NATO warships from Denmark and the UK. This is reported by Postimees.
According to local media, on September 13, the Mekhanik Stepanov vessel, launched in 2025, encountered an engine failure in Swedish territorial waters and began to drift towards Denmark. The power supply on board also went out.
Danish and British ships accompanied the vessel during the operation. The Danish Navy confirmed the intervention of the TV2 television channel, but refrained from providing additional details.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of increased security measures in the region. Sweden announced a record increase in its military budget for the first time since the Cold War - by 18%, from EUR 13 billion. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the decision was made after russian drones violated NATO airspace on September 10.
In response, the Alliance is deploying additional forces to the region, and Sweden has sent aircraft and air defense systems to Poland.
As a reminder, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced on September 12 that the alliance is launching Operation Eastern Sentry. Its goal is to strengthen NATO's eastern flank in the wake of the russian drone incident.
