Israel calls up 60,000 reservists ahead of new Gaza offensive

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will announce the call-up of 60,000 reservists for an offensive against the Hamas terror group in Gaza City, The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday, August 20.

Defense Minister Israel Katz has approved the plans of the IDF and security officials for an offensive against Hamas in Gaza. The 60,000 reservists are to receive their call-up orders.

"The orders were not immediate, but rather were slated to take place in several waves. The majority — around 40,000-50,000 — would be ordered to show up for duty on September 2. Another wave would take place in November-December, and a third wave in February-March 2026," the IDF said.

The Israel Defense Forces said it was extending the service of about 20,000 reservists currently on active duty for another 30-40 days. Thus, the total number of reservists at some point during the offensive will be about 130,000, the publication writes.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 17, the Israel Defense Forces announced the start of the first phase of a large-scale operation in the Gaza Strip called "Gideon's Chariots".

In mid-March of this year, the Israel Defense Forces launched a limited military operation in the Gaza Strip to force Hamas to release hostages.

Shortly before that, the Israeli forces resumed air strikes on the enclave due to the terrorists' refusal to release the hostages.
