Kremlin to use Alaska summit with Trump to divide US and Europe – ISW

The kremlin is trying to use the upcoming summit in Alaska to divide the United States and Europe, rather than to join peace efforts. In addition, the aggressor state russia is likely to violate any future ceasefire agreements by blaming Ukraine.

This is stated in the russian Offensive Campaign Assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) as of August 10, 2025, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

On August 10, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated on Telegram accounts that Europe is allegedly trying to prevent the United States from helping to stop the war in Ukraine.

Earlier, the head of the russian Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) Leonid Slutsky stated that European countries are allegedly pursuing an anti-russian policy and are trying to prevent a quick peace settlement in Ukraine.

However, russian political scientist Sergei Markov said in an interview with the Washington Post on August 10 that russia's main interest at the Alaska summit is to present Ukraine and Europe, not russia, as obstacles to peace in Ukraine. Markov said that russia refuses to take any steps back, and that the only compromise russia is willing to consider is to stop military efforts to seize the Odesa and Kharkiv Regions, as well as the cities of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

Analysts noted that in the meantime, European and Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have consistently demonstrated their willingness to facilitate and participate in negotiations and secure substantive ceasefire agreements to advance a peace initiative that russia has consistently rejected, seeking additional battlefield victories and additional concessions from Ukraine and the West.

The Institute also noted that the kremlin has long sought to weaken the cohesion between the United States, Europe, and Ukraine as part of a broader campaign to deter further Western support for Ukraine and to distract attention from russia's intransigence on the peace process and its unwillingness to compromise on putin's initial military demands.

"ISW continues to assess that Russia remains unwilling to compromise on its long-standing war aims of preventing Ukraine from joining NATO, regime change in Ukraine in favor of a pro-Russian proxy government, and Ukraine's demilitarization - all of which would ensure Ukraine's full capitulation - and that Russia will very likely violate and weaponize any future ceasefire agreements in Ukraine while blaming Ukraine for the violations as it repeatedly did in Spring 2025," the analysts concluded.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, European leaders are eager to talk to US President Donald Trump before a planned meeting in Alaska with russian dictator vladimir putin.

Recall that Trump and putin will hold a bilateral meeting in Alaska next Friday, August 15.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the Alliance remains committed to supporting Ukraine with weapons and everything necessary - regardless of the results of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and russian leader vladimir putin.
