NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the Alliance remains committed to supporting Ukraine with weapons and everything it needs — regardless of the outcome of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and russian leader vladimir putin.
He said this in an interview with CBS News.
Rutte emphasized that NATO's goal is to help Ukraine "stay in the fight and be in the best possible position."
Commenting on the meeting itself, Rutte noted: Trump wants to find out whether putin is ready to negotiate seriously. If not, the dialogue will end. If so, the process will continue with the involvement of Ukraine and European partners.
The Secretary General also emphasized that the occupation of Ukrainian territories cannot be recognized in a legal sense, although the negotiations may concern ways to respond to the current situation, when part of Ukraine is controlled by russia.
As a reminder, NATO has begun coordinating regular deliveries of large arms packages to Ukraine. Two deliveries are expected this month.
Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands have agreed to finance the transfer of US weapons to Ukraine worth over USD 1 billion.
