US President Donald Trump suggested that russian dictator vladimir putin would be open to a peaceful resolution to russia's war with Ukraine if a 'territory swap' was discussed.
This was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.
On Wednesday, Trump said there was a "very high probability" that he would soon meet with putin and Zelenskyy in another attempt to achieve peace between the two countries.
During a phone call earlier on Wednesday, which also included President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the US President informed allies that he was considering holding such a meeting. According to people familiar with the conversation, Trump was positive about the possibility of a ceasefire.
The same sources told Bloomberg that Trump also suggested that putin would be open to peace talks in exchange for discussing a territory swap.
Putin has laid claim to the Crimean peninsula, which russia illegally annexed in 2014, as well as to the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine - Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, which his troops did not fully occupy.
The publication recalls that the US had previously proposed recognizing Crimea as russian as part of any agreement, as well as effectively relinquishing control over parts of other Ukrainian regions that russia occupied. As part of these previous proposals, Ukraine would have returned control over the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson Regions.
Putin and Witkoff also discussed relations between russia and the US at the meeting and noted that they could develop according to "a completely different, mutually beneficial scenario," said Yuriy Ushakov, an aide to the Kremlin leader.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on August 6, US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, met with russian dictator vladimir putin in the Kremlin.
After that, Trump announced that his personal meeting with putin could take place in the near future. The White House stated that the initiative for the meeting between russian president vladimir putin and US President Donald Trump came from the russian side.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that a meeting between President Donald Trump with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and russian president vladimir putin would only be possible if the gap between their positions could be narrowed.
