August 6 is the anniversary of the start of the Kursk offensive operation of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, which for the first time transferred a full-scale war to the territory of an aggressor country. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported this on his Facebook.
"This was a decisive and bold step in response to the enemy's preparation of a new offensive campaign in the north of Slobozhanshchyna. We did not expect a blow - we inflicted it ourselves. We proved by deed that Ukraine is capable not only of defending itself, but also of acting in advance and effectively attacking," the message says.
Our units were able to break through the enemy's defenses, go deep into the enemy's rear and disrupt its logistics. According to Syrskyi, at the peak of the operation, the Armed Forces of Ukraine controlled up to 1,300 km² of the Kursk Oblast.
"We demoralized the Russian personnel and forced them to transfer significant reserves to Kursk, easing the pressure on other areas of the front. At that time, we did not allow the enemy to implement their offensive plans and formed a buffer zone, thanks to which Sumy and Kharkiv remain on free Ukrainian land," he says.
During the year, the russian army lost a total of more than 77,000 servicemen killed and wounded (of which about 4,000 were citizens of the DPRK).
7,236 units of russian weapons and military equipment were destroyed or damaged, including 211 tanks, 1,083 armored personnel carriers, 907 artillery systems, 1 aircraft, 3 helicopters, 15 air defense systems, 2,795 units of motor vehicles.
The Kursk operation also provided an invaluable humanitarian result: 1,018 captured russian servicemen replenished the exchange fund, which has already allowed hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers to return home.
"In fact, the enemy was able to restore lost positions and areas only after it attracted DPRK troops, significantly increased its grouping, and transferred the main intensity of the use of guided bombs to the Kursk Oblast," says Syrskyi.
According to him, the offensive operation in the Kursk Oblast achieved most of the goals set by the state's top leadership.
As of today, Ukrainian troops maintain a presence in the Glushkovsky District of the Kursk Oblast, restraining part of the russian offensive group.
A month ago, Syrskyi reported that Ukraine had restored and is holding positions in the Kursk and Belgorod Oblasts.
