Families of soldiers killed in captivity will receive UAH 15 million assistance - Defense Ministry

Families of soldiers killed in captivity will receive a one-time cash benefit (OCB) in the amount of UAH 15 million. This was announced by the Ministry of Defense, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

In particular, it is reported that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law dated July 16, which equates the death of a serviceman in captivity to death while defending the Motherland.

"According to the document, families of soldiers killed in captivity during the period of martial law will receive a one-time cash benefit (OCB) in the amount of UAH 15 million," the report says.

It is noted that the law clearly defines the right to assistance regardless of the cause of death in captivity, however, the norm does not apply to those who voluntarily surrendered to the enemy.

The document also increased from three months to one year the period for payment of OCB to military personnel in the event of injury or illness that led to partial loss of work capacity without establishing disability; these norms also apply to persons discharged from military service who partially lost their work capacity due to the same reasons.

In addition, the procedure for determining the amount of OCB when changing the disability group has changed; now the subsistence minimum in the year of establishing the new group is taken into account, and not the initial establishment of disability.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in September 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers simplified the procedure for assigning a one-time cash benefit in the event of the death or disability of military personnel, in particular, if previously decisions on assigning OCB were made by an interdepartmental commission, and the funds were paid by social protection bodies, now the Ministry of Veterans makes the decision on assigning the benefit and pays it by crediting funds to the recipient's bank account.
