Von der Leyen addresses Zelenskyy due to threat to independence of NABU and SAPO

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed serious concern to Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the adoption of Law No. 12414, which, according to Brussels, undermines the independence of NABU and SAPO.

RBC-Ukraine reported this with reference to the statement of the European Commission Speaker Guillaume Mercier.

The EU emphasized that NABU and SAPO are key to reforms and the fight against corruption, and such changes contradict Ukraine's obligations as a candidate for accession to the European Union.

"The President of the European Commission contacted President Zelenskyy regarding these recent events. President von der Leyen expressed serious concern about the consequences of these amendments and asked the Ukrainian government to provide an explanation," Guillaume Mercier said.

In his opinion, anti-corruption bodies are considered fundamental in a constitutional state and are crucial for the implementation of reforms.

Guillaume Mercier recalled that respect for the rule of law and the fight against corruption are key elements of the European Union, and Ukraine, as a candidate country for accession, must fully comply with these standards.

Let us recall that the law on the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office may affect the supply of military assistance to Ukraine from the European Union countries.
