Law on NABU and SAPO may negatively affect European military aid to Ukraine - WP

The Law on the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) may affect the supply of military aid to Ukraine from the European Union countries.

The American publication The Washington Post (WP) reported this on Tuesday, July 23.

Unnamed European diplomats told the publication that the news of the adoption of bill No. 12414 and its subsequent signing by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy caused alarm and concern.

"Very concerned," were the only words that could be heard from one of them, WP writes.

Another diplomat said on condition of anonymity that such actions by the Ukrainian authorities undermine trust between Kyiv and its Western allies.

He suggested that the situation with the NABU and SAPO could jeopardize Ukraine's chances of joining the EU and even weaken the desire to increase military assistance to Ukraine.

"We hope that this will not happen, but such actions certainly do not help win this war. These steps will undoubtedly weaken Ukraine even more, and we do not need this," the publication quotes its interlocutor as saying.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on July 22, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted in the second reading for bill No. 12414.

This bill provides for granting the Prosecutor General access to all NABU and SAPO cases. He will also receive the authority to independently report suspicions to top officials.

263 MPs voted "in favor." Earlier, the list of parliamentarians who supported the bill became known.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed bill No. 12414 on July 22. It came into effect today, July 23.

Also today, the head of state gathered the heads of all law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies, stating that they agreed to work constructively.
