Polish producers in trouble over rapeseed imports from Ukraine

Polish oil producers demand unblocking of rapeseed imports from Ukraine.

This is reported by NV Business, citing Money.pl, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

They estimate that the raw material shortage in the 2025/2026 season will reach at least 0.5 million tons, which will negatively affect Polish processing plants.

The report states that the Polish Association of Oil Producers (PSPO), which represents 95% of oil and fat factories in Poland, has appealed to Prime Minister Donald Tusk with a request to intervene in amending the resolution of the Ministry of Development and Technology of September 15, 2023, which prohibits the import of agricultural products from Ukraine.

The reason, according to the association, is the projected shortage of rapeseed on the Polish market.

According to PSPO, this deficit is expected to reach at least 0.5 million tons in the 2025/2026 season.

It is noted that the situation of the domestic oilseed industry is already "extremely difficult".

It is already experiencing a shortage of raw materials for the 2024/2025 season, given the processing capacity of oilseed refineries, which exceeds 4 million tons of rapeseed per year.

PSPO Director General Adam Stempien noted that the 2023 resolution banned the import of rapeseed from Ukraine, but at the same time did not ban the import of oil, which affects Polish processing plants.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 16, the Verkhovna Rada voted to introduce an export duty on soybeans and rapeseed in the amount of 10%.

Such duties are being introduced for trading companies ostensibly to stimulate domestic processing.

Representatives of the agricultural sector are convinced that this is beneficial for large processors and large producers, as it will allow reducing the purchase prices for these crops.

The global consequence of the initiative may be a reduction in rapeseed and soybean crops, loss of export markets, destruction of European integration processes, and a undermined reputation of Ukraine among investors.
