The Verkhovna Rada has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
Yaroslav Zhelezniak, a Member of Parliament from the Holos faction, announced this on the Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"The Rada dismissed Shmyhal's government. 261 votes in favor. Now all acting ministers are in office, tomorrow they must appoint a new Shmyhal and complete this bed-moving," he wrote.
Thus, 261 parliamentarians voted for the relevant resolution on Shmyhal's resignation, with the minimum required 226.
According to the Constitution, the resignation of the Prime Minister entails the resignation of the entire Cabinet of Ministers. The Cabinet of Ministers, whose resignation was accepted by the Rada, continues to exercise its powers until the newly formed Cabinet of Ministers begins its work.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 15, Shmyhal announced that he had resigned.
Shmyhal has held the post of Prime Minister since March 2020.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on July 14 that he had proposed that First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Yuliia Svyrydenko head the government and renew its work.
Zelenskyy also announced that he intends to propose to the Verkhovna Rada to appoint Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal as Minister of Defense instead of Rustem Umerov.
In addition, the President is considering the possibility of appointing Defense Minister Rustem Umerov as Ambassador to the United States.
According to the Constitution, the Prime Minister is appointed by the Verkhovna Rada upon the proposal of the President.
The President nominates a candidate for the position of Prime Minister upon the proposal of a coalition of parliamentary factions in the Verkhovna Rada or a parliamentary faction that includes the majority of parliamentarians from the constitutional composition of the Rada.
The Minister of Defense and the Minister of Foreign Affairs are appointed by the Verkhovna Rada upon the proposal of the President, while other members of the Cabinet of Ministers are appointed by the Verkhovna Rada upon the proposal of the Prime Minister.
