US President Donald Trump plans to send weapons to Ukraine for the first time since returning to office within the framework of his presidential powers, which were actively used by his predecessor Joe Biden. The expected cost of the package could reach approximately USD 300 million.
This is reported by Reuters with reference to its own sources.
As the agency notes, this step indicates a new interest by Trump in supporting Ukraine's defense. According to the interlocutors, the president's team will determine the weapons from American stocks that will be sent to Kyiv using the emergency reserves reduction mechanism.
"The Republican president's (Trump - ed.) position on Ukraine's defense has been inconsistent. Sometimes he has criticized US spending and spoken out in favor of russia, but also sometimes expressed support for Kyiv and criticized the Kremlin," Reuters notes.
On Tuesday, Trump said that the United States would send more weapons to strengthen Ukraine's defense against russian pressure. According to sources, the package may include Patriot interceptors and medium-range missiles, but a final decision on the composition of the aid is expected after a meeting on Thursday.
So far, the Trump administration has only transferred to Kyiv the weapons that Biden approved. The presidential aid program allows the head of state to use reserves to support allies in emergency situations.
The agency adds that the United States still has about USD 3.86 billion under this program, and the latest package for USD 500 million was approved by Biden on January 9. Supplies could arrive at the front in a few days, since the stocks are located in Europe.
Earlier it was reported that the United States has already resumed supplies of 155-mm shells and GMLRS missiles to Ukraine.
