US President Donald Trump promised Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a phone call to immediately send 10 Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine – less than planned in the suspended supply and to help find other ways of supply. This is reported by Axios with reference to its own sources.
Thus, according to two sources informed about the phone call, Trump told Zelenskyy that he wanted to help Ukraine's air defense, but emphasized that the United States had to suspend the latest supply of weapons to conduct an inspection of its own stockpiles.
The publication notes that due to the reduction in stocks against the backdrop of numerous ongoing wars, there is growing concern among NATO countries about the abandonment of ammunition, especially interceptors, faster than they can be made.
"Buying a Patriot missile is not the same as going to Walmart, taking 10 off the shelf and going home," one of Trump's advisers told the publication.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has identified available Patriot missile batteries in Germany and Greece that the United States would like to finance and send to Ukraine.
"These conversations have been going on for months," the Trump adviser said.
For his part, Trump has offered Germany to sell one of its Patriot batteries to Ukraine, according to three sources familiar with the discussions. They said the United States and European allies would split the cost of the purchase. The publication reports that Trump and Merz have not reached an agreement, but officials say the discussions are ongoing.
German officials say Germany has transferred a very high percentage of its Patriots to Ukraine, even more than the United States in relative terms.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, it was officially reported following a telephone conversation on July 4 that Zelenskyy discussed Ukraine's air defense, defense industry capabilities, and opportunities for joint production with Trump. In addition, they discussed mutual procurement and investments, exchanged views on the diplomatic situation, and joint work with America and other partners.
Then Zelenskyy also congratulated Trump and the entire American people on the US Independence Day.
It should be noted that the day before, Trump had a telephone conversation with russian leader vladimir putin, which, according to him, did not lead to any progress in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
