European Commission calls results of "referendum" in Hungary non-binding

The European Commission has stated that the survey on Ukraine's membership in the European Union, which was organized in Hungary, is not binding.

According to RBC-Ukraine, the speaker of the European Commission, Guillaume Mercier stated this.

"As you know, national consultations are a matter for the authorities of a particular country, so Hungary and the Hungarian government must explain what they plan to do with them further," Mercier said.

He added that the European Commission takes into account the results of the Hungarian survey, but does not consider them non-binding.

Mercier noted that Ukraine is implementing the reforms necessary for membership in the European Union, emphasizing that this is happening in conditions of full-scale war.

The speaker drew attention to the fact that according to the conclusions of the European Commission, Ukraine meets the criteria for opening the first cluster of negotiations on accession to the EU.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on June 27, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that a referendum had been held in the country on Ukraine's membership in the EU. According to him, Hungarians voted against it, which is why Budapest has stopped Kyiv's entry into the bloc.
