The results of the referendum in Hungary on Ukraine's accession to the European Union made it possible to stop Ukraine's entry into the EU.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stated this in the Brussels studio of the Hungarian Kossuth Radio, Telex reports.
Orbán also reportedly said that "Ukraine, through no fault of its own, is an undefined entity and that we do not even know what Ukraine is today and what the length of its borders is," adding that Ukraine cannot be accepted into NATO because that would mean immediate war.
"Ukraine's membership in the EU would mean destroying ourselves. In the shortest possible time, we would be at war with Russia, and we would bring it into the territory of the EU, including Hungary," Orbán said.
He also stated that Hungary understands the Ukrainians and sees their heroic struggle, but "thanks to over 2 million votes" the Hungarians "stopped Ukraine's accession to the European Union".
"We also see that they need help, but we want to help in a way that does not destroy ourselves. Ukraine's membership in the EU would mean that we would destroy ourselves. We would instantly be drawn into a war with Russia and bring it to the territory of the EU, and therefore to the territory of Hungary," stressed prime minister Orbán.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin made a statement regarding Hungary's position on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. According to him, the opposition of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Hungarian government is "deeply regrettable" and "very problematic".
Orbán previously stated that NATO cannot have any business in Ukraine, since it is not a member of the Alliance, and his task is to keep it that way.
