Rutte explains why he called Trump "daddy": it was metaphor about Europe, not appeal to US President

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said that he did not call US President Donald Trump "daddy" at the summit, but that his words were a metaphor.

This is what Hill writes.

According to him, the words "daddy" were referring to the US and how Europe approaches security issues.

"I said that sometimes in Europe I hear countries asking: 'Hey Mark, will the US stay with us?' And I said that it's a bit like a little child asking his daddy: 'Hey, are you still staying with the family?' So in that sense I used the word "daddy" - not that I called President Trump daddy," Rutte said.

Recall that during a previous conversation with journalists, Rutte mentioned "daddy" in the context of discussing the American operation in Iran. After Trump's words, who compared the confrontation between Iran and Israel to a school fight, Rutte added: "And daddy sometimes has to use a strong word," to which Trump replied with a smile.

Later at a press conference, the US President commented on the situation with humor: "He did it very gently: 'Daddy, you're my daddy.'"

Recall that following US President Donald Trump's participation in the NATO summit in The Hague, the White House published a video using the phrase "Daddy’s Home" and the song of the same name in the title. Note that at the summit, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called Trump "daddy" because of the settlement of the Israel-Iran conflict.
