The russian president vladimir putin probably has territorial ambitions outside Ukraine, and also seeks to end the war in Ukraine.
US president Donald Trump stated this in a conversation with journalists at a briefing following the NATO summit in The Hague.
Journalists asked Trump whether putin could have territorial ambitions outside Ukraine, since many statements at the NATO summit were made about this.
"Possible, it's possible," the US president said.
He also said that he was aware that the russian president would like to "get out" of the war in Ukraine.
"I know one thing he would like to settle. He would like to get out of this thing, it's a mess for him. He called, he said can you help me with Iran? I said no, you can help me with russia.
He would like to get out of this situation. It's a mess for him. He called the other day and said, 'Can I help you with Iran?' I said, 'No, you can help me with Russia,'" Trump said.
President Trump stressed that he believed putin had been led astray, noting that the United States had already resolved two international conflicts and that he had previously thought that resolving the Ukraine-russia conflict would be easier.
"In the last few weeks we took care of India and Pakistan... We did two others in addition to that. Nobody's ever done anything like this. I consider him a person that's I think been misguided. I'm very surprised. I thought we would have had that settled," the US president said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, US President Donald Trump called his promise to end the war in Ukraine and reach a peace agreement in 24 hours "sarcastic."
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that his meeting with US President Donald Trump in The Hague on the sidelines of the NATO summit was meaningful, and they talked about how to achieve a ceasefire and real peace.
