President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Hennadii Shapovalov as the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The corresponding decree No. 412/2025 was published on the website of the head of state on Thursday, June 19.
"To appoint Shapovalov Hennadii Mykolaiovych as the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the document says.
The online encyclopedia Wikipedia states that Hennadii Shapovalov is a brigadier general of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He passed all levels of military service from the commander of a tank platoon to the commander of the 59th separate motorized infantry brigade named after Yakiv Handziuk.
From April 16, 2024 to February 4, 2025, he was the commander of the troops of the South Operational Command.
In 2022, he was the head of the Main Directorate for Military Cooperation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On June 20, 2023, he joined the Commission for the Coordination of Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine.
Since the spring of 2024, he has been the commander of the Tavria Operational Strategic Group of Forces.
On April 16, 2024, Shapovalov was appointed the commander of the troops of the South Operational Command, and was dismissed on February 4, 2025.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on June 1, the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykhailo Drapatyi announced that he had decided to resign due to the strike by the aggressor country russia on the training ground, which killed 12 servicemen.
On June 3, Drapatyi was appointed the Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
