Prisoner exchange took place today. Wounded and seriously ill defenders returned home

Today, June 19, another stage of the prisoner exchange took place in accordance with the Istanbul agreements. Seriously wounded and seriously ill Ukrainian soldiers returned home.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced this.

"Our people are returning home from Russian captivity. These are soldiers of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service. Defenders of Ukraine who fought in the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kyiv Regions," Zelenskyy said.

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported that each defender released today has serious medical diagnoses and illnesses as a result of injuries and captivity. Many have significant weight loss, dystrophy, ulcers, vision problems, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular diseases and digestive problems.

The Coordination Headquarters added that most of the released soldiers had been in captivity for more than 3 years. A significant part of them were captured during the defense of Mariupol.

All defenders released today are representatives of privates and non-commissioned officers.

It is noted that the soldiers released from captivity will undergo all necessary medical examinations, receive assistance with physical and psychological rehabilitation, as well as all due payments for the entire time they were in captivity.

"The Coordination Headquarters continues its work and in the near future we are preparing the next stage of the prisoner exchange," the Coordination Headquarters summarized.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on June 2, Ukraine and the aggressor country russia agreed in Istanbul to exchange all seriously wounded prisoners of war, as well as all young soldiers aged 18-25.
