The administration of US President Donald Trump has in recent weeks shut down an interagency working group that was created to develop pressure measures on russia in order to speed up peace talks on Ukraine.
Reuters reported this, citing three US officials.
The group began operating in the spring of 2025, but by May it became clear that the White House was not interested in strengthening anti-russian measures. The agency's interlocutors note that, amid the lack of political support from the President, its activities have gradually faded.
"It lost steam toward the end because the president wasn't there. Instead of doing more, maybe he wanted to do less," one of the officials said.
The group was finally dismantled about three weeks ago during a large-scale personnel restructuring of the US National Security Council. Most of the employees who dealt with the Ukrainian direction were dismissed. Reuters emphasizes that the existence of this group had not previously been officially reported.
The group included representatives of the State Department, the Treasury Department, the Pentagon, the intelligence community and was coordinated through the National Security Service. Among the measures developed were restrictions on the supply of goods to Russia through third countries, economic pressure on individual post-Soviet republics, as well as proposals for covert operations.
Recall that US President Donald Trump decided to leave the G7 summit in Kananaskis (Canada) early and return to Washington. The reason was the aggravated situation in the Middle East.
Recall that on the sidelines of the summit, Trump was scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting will probably have to be canceled or postponed.
