On Tuesday, June 10, the first stage of the return of seriously wounded and injured soldiers from russian captivity took place. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this on the Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"We are continuing the return of our people, which was agreed upon in Istanbul. Today is the first stage of the return of our seriously wounded and injured soldiers from russian captivity. All of them need immediate medical care. This is an important humanitarian act. Already at home, in Ukraine, soldiers from various components of our Defense and Security Forces of Ukraine: the Armed Forces, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the State Special Transport Service," he said.
Zelenskyy stressed that the exchanges should continue, the Ukrainian side is doing everything to find and return each and every one who is in captivity.
In turn, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported that today the first stage of the exchange of prisoners in the category of “seriously wounded and seriously ill” took place. All the Defenders released today have serious injuries and serious illnesses: amputated limbs, vision problems, abscesses, infections, traumas, shrapnel wounds and chronic diseases. Some of the released Defenders have been diagnosed with hepatitis and tuberculosis. The returned Defenders will be taken to medical centers to undergo all necessary examinations and be sent for further treatment and medical rehabilitation.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on June 9, Zelenskyy announced that a new exchange of prisoners with the russians had begun, which will continue in several stages in the coming days.
The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported on June 9 that the first group of released servicemen under the age of 25 is returning home, the 66th exchange of prisoners is underway, for security reasons, the final figures of the released will be made public after the exchange process is completed.
During the second round of talks in Istanbul on June 2, russia and Ukraine agreed on a new release of prisoners and the exchange of bodies of the killed.
Zelenskyy previously said that an exchange of prisoners of war between Ukraine and russia was to take place on June 7 and 8, and the russian federation is ready to return 500 fighters out of the thousand agreed upon.
After the first meeting of the delegations of Ukraine and the russian federation in Turkey on May 16, a prisoner exchange in the "1,000 for 1,000" format took place on May 23-25.
