American M1 Abrams tanks are appearing less and less frequently in videos published from the fronts of the russian-Ukrainian war. This is due to the fact that the Ukrainian Defense Forces have lost almost the entire fleet of these combat vehicles.
This is reported by Military Watch Magazine.
According to experts and OSINT analysts, the Ukrainian army has lost 87% of the Abrams tanks supplied by the United States of America.
By the end of August 2024, the losses of American tanks were estimated at almost two-thirds - 20 out of 31 tanks. In the next nine months, footage of the destruction of seven more vehicles was published on the network.
In September, the footage confirmed serious damage to the Abrams tank, which was captured on video when it was captured and towed away by soldiers of the russian army in the Avdiyivka area of the Donetsk Region.
A few days later, footage of the destruction of two more tanks appeared on the network: one near the village of Berdychi, the other near the settlement of Vovche.
Less than a week later, on September 14, it was confirmed using photos from the network that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had lost another Abrams tank.
After that, photos and videos of Ukrainian Abrams tanks became increasingly rare.
In October 2024, it became known that the russians had captured an Abrams tank near Pokrovsk, Donetsk Region.
And not so long ago, the russians published a video of themselves towing two more tanks on a section of the front in the Sumy Region.
While it remains unclear how many of the captured Abrams tanks were subsequently returned to russia and what condition some of them were in, it remains a significant possibility that russia now has more serviceable tanks at its disposal than Ukraine.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in December 2024, former US President's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the Abrams tanks transferred to Ukraine were not very useful on the battlefield.
In October 2024, The Associated Press wrote that the Ukrainian military was forced to limit the use of Abrams tanks due to the large number of drones on the front line, which prevent the vehicles from being used for their intended purpose.
Back in January 2024, it became known that the Ukrainian military had to additionally modernize Abrams tanks to give them at least some protection against FPV drones.
