Gas injection into UGS ups 1.5 times in May - to 1.1 billion cubic meters

The volume of natural gas injection into Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities (UGS) in May 2025 amounted to about 1.1 billion cubic meters.

This is announced by the ExPro publication, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The report states that compared to May last year, gas injection increased almost 1.5 times - from 750 million cubic meters in May 2024 to 1.1 billion cubic meters in May 2025.

A significant increase in gas injection volumes is due to active preparation for the next heating season.

Given that Ukraine emerged from the last autumn-winter period with record low gas reserves in storage facilities, there is a need to increase injection volumes.

The increase in gas injection volumes was mainly due to imported resources, which accounted for about 45% of the total volume of injection into underground storage facilities in May, or about 500 million cubic meters. The rest of the gas injected into storage facilities is Ukrainian production - 55% of the total injection volume.

Ukraine is gradually restoring gas production after significant damage due to massive russian shelling in February-March, but it has not yet been able to return to the January level.

Gas reserves in Ukrainian underground storage facilities at the beginning of June, according to ExPro, amounted to 6.8 billion cubic meters.

The storage facilities are 22% full.

Although this year's reserves are still the lowest in the last 11 years, the gap from last year is gradually closing.

It is noted that by the start of the next heating season (November 1), Ukraine needs to accumulate at least 12.65 billion cubic meters of natural gas in storage facilities.

However, for a sustainable winter under any conditions, reserves must be higher, which will require an increase in gas imports.

At the initiative of the Ministry of Energy, Ukraine and the participating countries of the so-called "Vertical Corridor" have already agreed on a new joint product that will allow importing additional volumes of gas from the Trans-Balkan direction this summer.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Ukraine pumped 1.06 billion cubic meters of natural gas into Ukrainian storage facilities from April 17 to May 24, 2025.
