Ukraine pumps over 1 billion cubic meters of gas into storage, but reserves remain the lowest in 11 years

Ukraine pumped 1.06 billion cubic meters of natural gas into Ukrainian storage from April 17 to May 24, 2025.

This is announced by the ExPro publication, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The report states that Ukraine has already surpassed last year's injection volumes, when from March 31, 2024 (the start of the injection season) to May 24, 2024, 1.03 billion cubic meters of gas were pumped into storage.

This year's gas injection season into storage began later than last year, which is due to cold weather in the first half of April and damaged domestic gas production due to massive russian attacks in February-March.

Already in May, Ukraine continues to actively restore the affected gas production facilities, but it has not yet been possible to return to the January production level (54 million cubic meters per day).

It is noted that in May, almost 800 million cubic meters of natural gas have already been pumped into Ukrainian storage facilities, 40% more than in the same period last year.

Gas injection volumes continue to grow - up to 47 million cubic meters on May 24, which became the highest daily level of gas injection into storage facilities in over 1.5 years, since October 2023.

The growth in gas injection volumes into underground storage facilities is primarily due to an increase in gas imports to Ukraine.

Natural gas import volumes to Ukraine in recent days exceed 20 million cubic meters per day, which is the highest level since February 2025.

According to ExPro, in May, NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine remains the main importer of gas to Ukraine.

At the same time, the first private companies are also importing small volumes of gas in preparation for a possible full-fledged resumption of commercial imports if domestic market prices significantly exceed European ones.

The bulk of gas is currently imported from Hungary, which is the cheapest route for gas imports - about 9.1 million cubic meters per day.

In addition, 5.9 million cubic meters of gas are imported from Poland per day.

Against the background of maximum use of the Hungarian and Polish routes for gas imports, Ukraine resumed gas imports from Slovakia in mid-May.

The Slovak route is more expensive compared to the Hungarian or Polish ones, but the maximum guaranteed input capacity along this route is higher - 42 million cubic meters per day.

Import volumes from Slovakia are gradually increasing - from 0.4 million cubic meters on May 15 to 5.2 million cubic meters on May 25.

Given that the Hungarian and Polish routes are already being used to the maximum, and the Slovak route may have limited available resources in Slovakia, Ukraine is paying attention to another route for gas imports to Ukraine - the "Vertical Corridor".

Natural gas reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities reached 6.46 billion cubic meters on May 24, according to ExPro data.

This year's storage reserves remain the lowest on this date in at least the last 11 years.

In order to accumulate 12.92 billion cubic meters this year, Ukraine needs to pump over 6.4 billion cubic meters of gas into storage facilities during June-October, almost the same amount as is currently in storage facilities.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, natural gas reserves in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities (UGS) exceeded 6 billion cubic meters on May 11.

According to ExPro calculations, Ukraine pumped 258 million cubic meters of natural gas into underground gas storage facilities (UGS) during April 2025.

Natural gas imports to Ukraine as of May 5 since the beginning of 2025 amounted to 1.12 billion cubic meters.
