EU to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until 2027, then begin returning them home - Politico

The European Commission is developing a plan to return Ukrainian citizens who were forced to leave their homeland due to the full-scale invasion of the aggressor country of russia and seek asylum in European Union countries.

Politico reported this with reference to its own sources.

Currently, about 4.3 million Ukrainians live in EU countries. The largest number of refugees from Ukraine is registered in Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic.

The agreement allowing Ukrainians to live and work in EU countries was concluded for a limited period, but has been repeatedly extended.

According to Politico, Brussels has begun work on a plan to return Ukrainians to their homeland after the cessation of hostilities. The publication's sources said that the measures that grant Ukrainians temporary protection status will be extended until March 2027. After that, EU countries will have to help refugees from Ukraine transfer to another legal status. It will be recommended to provide benefits for the sick, pregnant women and those with school-age children.

The emphasis is on maximum caution and a coordinated approach aimed at minimizing the risks of sudden and massive movements of people from one part of the EU to another.

Politico's interlocutors added that Brussels recommends that the bloc's countries create so-called "unity centers." These are information centers that will provide advice and support to those considering returning to their homeland, as well as help find work in the host country or in Ukraine. The centers will also offer language courses and cultural events.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in April this year, the Euractiv portal wrote that after the end of hostilities, the European Union may deprive millions of Ukrainian refugees of temporary protection status.
