Russia's losses in war against Ukraine are 10 times higher than number of deaths in two Chechen wars - CSIS

This summer, the losses of the aggressor country of russia as a result of a full-scale war against Ukraine are likely to reach one million killed and wounded. This is 10 times more than the russian federation lost as a result of the two Chechen wars.

This is stated in the material of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

From February 2022 to May 2025, up to 250,000 servicemen of the russian army were killed in the war against Ukraine.

No war or conflict waged by the USSR after World War II came close to the war against Ukraine in terms of the level of mortality among soldiers.

CSIS analysts also estimated that the average daily losses of the russian army continue to increase every year.

It is noted that most of the russian soldiers killed or wounded in Ukraine are from the northern or eastern regions of the russian federation, as well as convicts who served their sentences in colonies before signing a contract and being sent to war.

"Many of the soldiers killed and wounded in Ukraine <...> are not children of the Moscow and St. Petersburg elite. Putin probably considers such soldiers more replaceable and less capable of undermining his domestic political support base," the CSIS material says.

CSIS analysts estimated Ukraine's losses as a result of the full-scale invasion of the russian federation at 400,000 people, of which from 60,000 to 100,000 were killed as a result of hostilities.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, according to BBC News and the russian publication Mediazona, the number of confirmed russian army servicemen who were killed in the war against Ukraine exceeded 110,000 people.

We will remind, in May of this year, The New York Times wrote that since the beginning of 2024, the russian army has captured less than 1% of the territory of Ukraine, losing 400,000 people killed and wounded.

We also wrote that according to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of 2025, the russian army has lost 185,000 people killed and wounded.
