Ukraine facing natural gas shortage, authorities find half of necessary reserves – Zelenskyy

Due to the massive attacks of the russian federation on the gas infrastructure, Ukraine is threatened with a natural gas shortage.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this during a Zoom conversation with journalists on June 2, Suspilne reports on YouTube.

The Head of State reports that due to the russian attacks in Ukraine, significant losses have occurred in the storage and production capabilities of gas.

"We have a deficit, I don't want to tell you how much now, it's quite a large amount. We are experiencing this because there were massive attacks on gas storage facilities and also on the gas production infrastructure. And this has been happening since the fall of last year," Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy also reported that together with the Minister of Energy, they will look for ways to close the deficit in the event that Ukraine is unable to provide gas to the population. He also reported that Ukraine received a positive signal from the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, regarding gas.

"But we agreed with the Minister of Energy that we will look for ways to close this deficit, which may arise if everything does not recover, if we cannot fully provide our population with gas. We have found half of it, and we lack half. Let me put it this way, by EUR 1 billion. We are talking about the volume that I am talking about with the Norwegian Prime Minister," Zelenskyy said.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the price of gas for the population remains unchanged until the end of April 2026.

Ukraine has pumped over 1 billion cubic meters of gas into storage, but reserves remain the lowest in 11 years.
