Ukraine and Finland have launched an international Coalition of Civil Protection Shelters for Ukraine. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced this on his Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
Shmyhal and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo signed a corresponding statement on May 28 in Kyiv.
"We set ourselves clear goals: to coordinate the efforts of partners in the construction of shelters; to exchange best practices in this area; to create and support financing mechanisms for the construction of civil protection facilities. In particular, one of such tools may be the Ukraine Facility program launched by the European Union," Shmyhal said.
He noted that as of today, Ukraine has over 62,000 shelters, but they need much more, in addition, a number of facilities need modernization.
"The government is already implementing a strategy for building shelters. Our goal is to build 2,300 civil defense structures by 2027, and another 3,000 by 2030. We expect to attract about EUR 14 billion in resources for the construction of shelters through the activities of the Coalition," the Prime Minister said.
He called on the international community to join the Coalition and contribute to the construction of protective structures in Ukraine.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Shmyhal previously reported that 15 underground schools have already been built in Ukraine, and it is planned to put more than 180 such underground facilities into operation by the end of 2025.
In December 2024, Shmyhal reported that the Cabinet of Ministers will allocate UAH 6.2 billion to the regions in 2025 for the construction of shelters in schools.
