Refugees in EU: Ukrainian Ambassador explains whether temporary protection for Ukrainians will be extended after 2026

The European Union plans to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2027. The relevant decision is to be made during the meeting of the EU Council on Justice and Home Affairs on June 12-13 in Luxembourg.

This was reported by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the EU Vsevolod Chentsov in a comment to European Pravda.

"We expect that the EU Council will extend temporary protection for Ukrainians, and we assume that this extension will be until March 2027," the diplomat said.

He noted that the European Commission's decision is related to the security situation: "The security situation in Ukraine has had an impact, which, unfortunately, is not improving."

According to Chentsov, the EU takes into account the vulnerability of a significant part of Ukrainian refugees: "It is worth considering that approximately half of Ukrainians under temporary protection in the EU are women, and about a third are children, that is, vulnerable categories. The EU, the European Commission and the member states are treating this situation responsibly," he noted.

The Ambassador also reported that the EU is discussing further actions after the directive expires in 2027. Next week, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of National Unity Oleksii Chernyshov will travel to Brussels. He will meet with the European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner and other officials to discuss "the search for a common approach to this issue."

"We will ask how the European Commission and the member states will facilitate the return of our citizens - those who are ready to return - if the security situation allows it," Chentsov said.

The European Commission should work out an approach to the end of the directive after March 2027, taking into account consultations with the Ukrainian side.

Recall that temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU has currently been extended until March 2026.

The European Union has calculated the number of Ukrainian refugees. Most of them are in Germany and Poland.

Meanwhile, 40% of Ukrainian refugees are considering the possibility of returning to Ukraine after the war ends.
