President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that if Ukraine is not present at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in June, it will be a victory for the leader of the aggressor country, russia, vladimir putin, over NATO.
Zelenskyy stated this during a joint meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz with the media in Berlin, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"We have received signals from partners regarding Ukraine's participation in the NATO summit, but we would like, like you, to have a completely open conversation with our partners. What is important is the participation and what is the result for Ukraine of participating in this summit. I think this is right and fair. In my opinion, if Ukraine is not present at the NATO summit, it will be Putin's victory, but not over Ukraine, but over NATO, so the decision is up to the partners," Zelenskyy said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on Wednesday, May 28, Zelenskyy is on a visit to Germany.
The 2025 NATO summit will be held in The Hague, Netherlands, on June 24-25.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda believes that if NATO does not fulfill its promise regarding Ukraine's membership in the Alliance, it will be a serious reputational blow.
In February, US President Donald Trump said that Ukraine "can forget about NATO", and he believes that Ukraine's desire to become a member of the Alliance "is probably the reason" for the large-scale russian invasion.
