The killers shot lawyer and former Ukrainian politician Andrii Portnov five times, the last in the head, near the exclusive American School in the Madrid municipality of Pozuelo de Alarcón, Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported on Wednesday, May 21.
According to the newspaper, Portnov had dropped his two young daughters off at school at around 9:15 a.m. and was returning to his Mercedes E-Class car while talking on his mobile phone. When he was less than three meters from the car, he was shot in the back by a man wearing a cap, dark glasses and a tracksuit. At that moment, some parents were still returning to their cars in the parking lot located between the school and the student dormitory.
"The first to approach the fallen man was a woman who started calling for help and screaming. Then students from a neighboring building went outside and heard the shots clearly. One of them called the police and 112. "There were five or six shots," one of the young men, who was frightened by the explosions, later said," the article says.

Doctors upon arrival at the scene could only confirm Portnov's death as a result of gunshot wounds. Immediately after that, two police officers arrived at the scene and informed the school about everything that had happened. They also tried to find the mother of the two girls. The publication writes that the parents were divorced, and the murdered Ukrainian lived in the La Moraleja residential complex.
Sources told the newspaper that all the shots were fired from behind - one in the neck, and after the victim fell face down, the killers finished him off with a shot in the head.
Police are searching for at least two or three men who, according to investigative sources, participated in the murder. According to witnesses, the killer who shot Portnov was dressed in black. After the crime, the killer got into a car with an accomplice. Other sources indicated that the criminal fled to a wooded area, where the National Police launched a search operation using drones and a helicopter.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 21, former Ukrainian politician Andrii Portnov was shot dead in Spain.
