The mechanism for duty-free imports of Ukrainian goods with the European Union will cease to operate from June 5, as Poland returns to pre-war rules. The government will take care of Polish economic interests, even if they "confront" Ukrainian ones. This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, RMF24 reported on Tuesday, June 20.
Tusk stressed that duty-free imports of goods from Ukraine (ATM mechanism) will end from June 5, 2025. According to him, the liberalization of trade with Ukraine has hit Polish producers, especially farmers. The Prime Minister noted that the government wants to help Ukraine in the war with the aggressor country of russia, but this cannot happen at the expense of Polish interests.
"We are returning to the pre-war situation when it comes to border rules. The introduction of the ATM mechanism by the European Union has opened the Polish border wide to Ukrainian products, especially agricultural products, which are imported without any control. I did not say a single bad word at the time. But three or four months were enough to realize that this mechanism makes no sense, that it threatens the stability of the Polish market," Tusk said.
The Prime Minister said that the government would take care of Polish economic interests, even if they "confront" Ukrainian interests.
"I have no problem with this, because no one will tell me that I am anti-Ukrainian when it comes to the Ukrainian-russian war," Tusk stressed.
The publication recalls that the ATM mechanism was introduced in 2022 to support Ukraine during the war.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 16, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine is negotiating the extension of visa-free trade with the EU after June 5.
