India and Pakistan exchange accusations of ceasefire violations within hours of announcement

A new ceasefire between India and Pakistan, which came into effect on May 10, lasted only a few hours, with both countries accusing each other of violating it, Reuters reported.

The agreement on a complete and immediate ceasefire was reached after overnight talks brokered by the United States. President Donald Trump called the agreement "historic" and promised to expand trade with both countries.

However, on the same day, India said that Pakistan had violated the ceasefire, and Pakistan accused India of similar actions in response.

Despite this, the explosions on both sides of the border stopped on the morning of May 11. Residents of the border regions - including Karachi and Indian Kashmir - reported a tangible sense of relief. Power has been restored, airspace has been opened for all types of flights, and shops are open again.

However, other areas of bilateral relations remain frozen. India withdrew from the Indus River water sharing agreement after a recent attack on tourists, which it blamed on Pakistan. Trade between the countries has also been suspended, and a visa ban is in place.

Tensions between India and Pakistan began after a terrorist attack on April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists were killed. For two weeks, there was a shootout on the border, with both sides accusing each other of provocations. On May 7, India announced the start of Operation Sindoor and struck nine targets in Pakistan, saying that the targets were terrorists, not military personnel. Pakistan reported 26 deaths, while India reported 10 deaths and 48 injuries in retaliatory fire.

The air battle between India and Pakistan became one of the largest air battles in modern aviation history.

The day before, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar confirmed that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between Pakistan and India.
