US President Donald Trump plans to turn the upcoming mineral deal with Ukraine into a tool for political influence on the Kremlin. This was announced by US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent during a speech at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles.
According to Bessent, the idea of such an agreement belongs to Trump himself, and it has not only economic but also political implications.
“First, it will create additional leverage for him in negotiations with the russian leadership when the right moment comes,” the minister emphasized.
He added that the agreement also has symbolic meaning - it is designed to demonstrate unity between the US and Ukrainians.
“This was supposed to be a symbol for Ukrainians that the US remains by their side. It was also supposed to be a signal to the weary American public, which is skeptical about new financial commitments, that it is possible to have joint prosperity with Ukraine. And in a sense, this would be a tacit guarantee of security through economic partnership,” Bessent said.
Thus, the Trump administration views strategic cooperation with Ukraine in the subsoil sector as an instrument of not only economic but also geopolitical importance.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Yaroslav Zhelezniak, a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Holos faction, claims that the parliament will vote to ratify the mineral agreement on Thursday, May 8.
