A large hole was formed as a result of the drone strike. Work is currently underway to assess the damage and carry out short-term repairs. This is stated in the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
It took several weeks to completely extinguish the fire after the drone strike. However, the attack left a large hole in the roof of the confinement.
"Immediately after the drone strike, Ukrainian rescuers rushed to localize and subsequently extinguish the fire. Currently, efforts at the site are focused on assessing the full extent of the damage, as well as on carrying out short-term repair work. It is clear that the confinement structure, built at a huge cost and with significant international support, has suffered significant damage," IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said.
The IAEA team visited the site to assess the integrity of the building, as well as to observe the repair of the internal and external cladding.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on the night of February 14, 2025, a russian Shahed attack drone hit the roof of the New Safe Confinement.
On the day of the attack, the chief engineer of the Chornobyl NPP, Oleksandr Tytarchuk, stated that there was a risk of leakage of radioactive materials as a result of the drone strike.
As a reminder, EUR 400,000 were allocated from the Ukrainian budget to investigate damage to the Chornobyl NPP shelter.
