Russian drone hits sarcophagus at Chornobyl NPP, shelter damaged by fire

A russian strike drone with a high-explosive warhead hit the shelter that covers the destroyed power unit No. 4 at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The structure was damaged.

The IAEA and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have reported this.

According to IAEA employees, at about 01:50 a.m. they heard an explosion near the New Containment, which protects the destroyed reactor. The drone crashed into the roof of the isolation structure, where a fire started.

"Fire safety personnel and vehicles responded in a matter of minutes. At the moment, there are no signs of a breach in the New Safe Confinement’s internal containment," the IAEA said.

The radiation level inside and outside remains normal and stable, and there were also no casualties.

The agency's Director General, Rafael Grossi, said that the Chornobyl incident and the recent increase in military activity around the Zaporizhzhia NPP underscore the ongoing risks to nuclear security. He assured that the IAEA remains on high alert.

As we will recall, on February 5, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi also reported that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was forced to postpone the rotation of its mission to the Zaporizhzhia NPP due to the lack of security guarantees from russia.
