Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow is ready to conclude an agreement with the United States on the settlement of the situation in Ukraine. At the same time, he noted that some of the provisions of such an agreement still need to be finalized.
This was stated in Lavrov's interview with CBC News.
"We are ready to conclude an agreement. There are still some specific points - elements of this agreement that need to be finalized," the minister said.
In addition, Lavrov spoke about US President Donald Trump's approach to resolving the war in Ukraine.
"The President of the United States believes, and I think it is fair, that we are moving in the right direction," he said.
Lavrov's statements came against the backdrop of another massive attack by russian troops on Ukraine, which occurred on the night of April 24. Kyiv suffered the most, where people were killed and dozens were wounded. According to media reports, it was one of the bloodiest shellings of the capital in recent months. The attack coincided with Donald Trump's intensification of initiatives to end the war.
When the host asked why, despite Ukraine's statements of readiness for a ceasefire back in March, russia continues its attacks, including with civilian casualties, Lavrov repeated the Kremlin's common position:
"We strike only at military targets or civilian facilities used by the military. Putin has said this many times," he replied.
Returning to the topic of the negotiations, the russian foreign minister again stated that he sees the prerequisites for progress.
"There are several signs that we are moving in the right direction," Lavrov said, adding: "Trump is probably the only leader on Earth who has realized the need to eliminate the root causes of this situation."
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski that the terms of the ceasefire between Ukraine and the russian federation differ from what the media is reporting.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that the US demanded that russia recognize Ukraine's right to have its own army and preserve its defense industry.
In addition, Washington demands that Moscow hand over control of the Zaporizhzhia NPP to Ukraine, which was occupied by the russian army in March 2022.
