US may partially reduce tariffs on Chinese goods - WSJ

The White House administration is considering the possibility of reducing tariffs on imports from China from the current 145% to 50-65% in order to reduce trade tensions between the two countries.

This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing its own sources.

The US government is developing a differentiated approach: it is proposed to establish a 35% tariff on goods that do not pose a threat to national security, and at least 100% for critically important strategic items.

Despite the discussions, the final decision has not yet been made. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent emphasized that Donald Trump does not plan to remove tariffs unilaterally and expects "reciprocity" from China.

Beijing, in turn, declared its readiness for negotiations, but emphasized that it will not conduct a dialogue under pressure and threats.

Even if tariffs are reduced, some Chinese goods, including electronics, will remain virtually inaccessible to the American market.

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause in the new tariff system for everyone except China - for which the US President raised the tariff to 125% and left it in effect.
