Harvard risks losing another USD 1 billion due to conflict with Trump's team

The administration of Donald Trump is considering cutting another USD 1 billion in funding for Harvard University. These funds were previously allocated for health research.

The Wall Street Journal reports this, citing sources.

The reason for the new round of tension was the publication by Harvard of an official letter from the White House, which contained a list of demands for the university in the fight against anti-Semitism. The Trump administration planned to begin closed consultations, but Harvard decided not to keep the documents secret and made the documents public.

The university said that it had no confidentiality agreement, and the demands themselves looked more like pressure than an offer of cooperation. In particular, the letter contained points about government control over student admissions, university appointments and even the topics of discussions on campus.

Harvard President Alan Garber called the appeal an "ultimatum" and said that the university would not agree to conditions that contradict academic autonomy. Trump's team, on the other hand, believes that Harvard deliberately escalated the situation and had no intention of seeking a compromise.

Recall that in April, the US Department of Education announced a freeze on USD 2.2 billion in public funding for Harvard University after the institution's management refused to comply with the demands of the administration of President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, philosophy professor Jason Stanley, as well as historians Timothy Snyder and Marcy Shore, have decided to leave Yale University and move to Canada. Starting in the fall of 2025, they will work at the University of Toronto and teach at the Munk School.
