Renowned scholars led by Timothy Snyder leave US due to political situation and move to Canada

Philosophy professor Jason Stanley, as well as historians Timothy Snyder and Marci Shore have decided to leave Yale University and move to Canada. Starting in the fall of 2025, they will work at the University of Toronto and teach at the Munk School.

This is reported by Yale News.

One of the main reasons for this decision was the aggravation of the political situation in the US. In particular, Stanley explained that he was concerned about how universities respond to political pressure. He noted that he decided to leave Yale after the events at Columbia University, which came under pressure from the Trump administration. After threats to deport two protesters and a USD 400 million cut in funding, the university administration was forced to reconsider its policy and agree to external supervision of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies.

Yale University has not made any public statements on the matter. Dean Pericles Lewis said the university’s policy on free speech and protest will remain unchanged.

Marci Shore said the Munk School had been offering her and Snyder positions for a long time, and after two years of deliberation, they made a final decision after the 2024 election. Although Snyder’s press secretary stressed that his move to the University of Toronto was primarily for personal reasons, the decision was made before the US presidential election.

Stanley and Shore also recently joined a group of 3,000 Jewish faculty members who signed an open letter condemning the arrest of a protester at Columbia University and calling on the academic community to resist pressure from the Trump administration.

Marci Shore noted that many of her colleagues are considering leaving the country due to the political situation, which she describes as "America's descent into fascism."

Recall that a group of European countries are developing a plan to attract scientists from the United States who may be affected by cuts to education and research funding by the American government.
