Pope Francis to be buried in next 9 days

The funeral of Pope Francis I will take place in the next nine days according to the procedure chosen by the pontiff himself.

This was reported by ANSA, citing a statement from the Vatican.

Francis asked to be buried according to a simplified procedure. In particular, his body will be placed in a simple wooden coffin lined with zinc. Previously, it was supposed to be three coffins - made of cypress, lead and oak - nested inside each other.

The pontiff also canceled the tradition according to which the Pope's body was displayed on a raised platform for public viewing in St. Peter's Basilica.

Francis will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. This is one of the four main papal basilicas in Rome. Francis will be the first Pope in over 100 years to be buried outside the Vatican.

2-3 weeks after the Pope's funeral, the College of Cardinals will gather in the Sistine Chapel to hold a conclave to elect a new Pope.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on Monday, April 21, Pope Francis I died in the Vatican. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced this.

In Pope Francis' Easter message, which was his last public speech, the pontiff called for peace in Ukraine.

The death of Pope Francis is allegedly not related to bilateral pneumonia, with which the pontiff was hospitalized in mid-February 2025.
