On Monday, April 21, Pope Francis I died in the Vatican. This was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Vatican News writes.

"Dear brothers and sisters, it is with deep sadness that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. Today at 7:35 am, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the Father's house," he said.

Farrell emphasized that Francis I's entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his Church.

"He taught us to live the values ​​of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal charity, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With infinite gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we entrust the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the Triune God," the Cardinal added.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected the 266th Pope on March 13, 2013. He took the throne name Francis in honor of the founder of the Franciscan order, Francis of Assisi.

Pope Francis has died at the age of 88.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, shortly before his death, Francis I suffered a severe attack of bilateral pneumonia.

On February 14, 2025, the pontiff was hospitalized. And on February 22, it became known that he had suffered a prolonged respiratory crisis and was in critical condition, he was given a blood transfusion.

On March 7, the Pope recorded an audio message and thanked everyone who supported and worried about him.

On March 23, Pope Francis made his first public appearance since his hospitalization from the balcony of Rome's Gemelli Hospital, before leaving the facility where he had been hospitalized since February 14.

At the same time, on Easter, April 20, Francis made his first appearance in a wheelchair in St. Peter's Square since suffering from double pneumonia, greeting tens of thousands of Catholics after Easter Mass at the Vatican.
