Zelenskyy on death of Pope Francis: he prayed for peace in Ukraine and for Ukrainians

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated regarding the death of Pope Francis that he prayed for peace in Ukraine and for Ukrainians. Zelenskyy announced this on X, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Millions of people around the world are mourning the tragic news of the death of Pope Francis. His life was dedicated to God, people and the Church. He knew how to give hope, alleviate suffering with prayer and promote unity. He prayed for peace in Ukraine and for Ukrainians. We mourn together with Catholics and all Christians who sought spiritual support from Pope Francis. Eternal memory!" he noted.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, 88-year-old Pope Francis died in the Vatican on Monday, April 21.

In February, the Pope called on Ukrainian youth to "reject war".

Pope Francis, in his traditional Christmas message Urbi et Orbi in December 2024, called for peace talks between Ukraine and russia, emphasizing the need to end the war. The call came against the backdrop of the Pope's previous controversial statements on Ukraine, including his statement about the need for a "white flag", which drew criticism from Ukrainian officials.

Zelenskyy, during a meeting with Pope Francis in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican in October 2024, asked to facilitate the return of Ukrainians from russian captivity.
